The decades old ban on federal funding for syringe access programs for injection drug users has finally been lifted.
Syringe exchange has been shown to reduce the transmission of HIV and Hepatitis C without increasing drug use, injection drug use, or improper disposal of used syringes. Syringe exchange programs also function as a bridge to treatment. Syringe access programs are a very good thing.
I’ve been following this issue for many years. Our politicians have ignored the conclusions of our own federal scientists at the CDC and elsewhere for too long. It’s good to see this made right.
